How admission works
Sutton Grammar School admits through the Selective Eligibility Test (SET), which is shared by six Sutton schools: Sutton Grammar School, Wallington County Grammar School, Wilson's School, Nonsuch High School for Girls, Wallington High School for Girls and Greenshaw High School.
- Stage 1 is two multiple-choice papers, Maths and English, of roughly 40 to 50 minutes each. There is no verbal or non-verbal reasoning.
- Stage 2 is two written papers, Maths and English, of around 45 minutes to 1 hour each. They are not multiple choice. Every boy who passes Stage 1 is invited to Stage 2, and no pass mark is stated in advance. Sutton Grammar School, Wallington County Grammar School and Wilson's School share the same boys' Stage 2 test. The school describes the test on its own SET page.
Passing the SET does not guarantee a place. Each school sets its own pass mark after the papers are marked, and Sutton Grammar School adjusts marks for age and for the child's income deprivation score. Boys who reach the required standard in both stages are ranked, and places are offered in this order:
- Looked after and previously looked after children.
- Children of permanent staff.
- Up to 10 places for Pupil Premium boys living in the Sutton area postcodes.
- 75 places for boys living in the Sutton area postcodes, by rank order of combined SET and Stage 2 scores.
- All remaining places, by rank order from any postcode.
Ties are broken by straight-line distance to the school. Applications go through the London Borough of Sutton's coordinated scheme.
