How admission works
The school is part of the Gloucestershire Grammar Schools group and admits through their shared entrance test, provided by GL Assessment. Children sit two multiple-choice papers of about 50 to 55 minutes each, covering verbal ability (comprehension, vocabulary and verbal reasoning), numerical reasoning and non-verbal reasoning. The test moves to a new provider, FSCE, for the summer 2027 test (2028 entry).
Pate's splits its intake into four bands: looked-after children, a capped 15 'Priority Places' for disadvantaged pupils (using a widened qualifying band up to 15% below the normal cut-off, prioritising Pupil Premium pupils from specific listed postcodes and then those within the Cheltenham Borough Council boundary), 'Non-Priority (Local)' places up to a running total of 105 for Gloucestershire/local-postcode pupils, and a guaranteed minimum of 45 'Non-Priority (UK-wide)' places open to any postcode in the country.
