The school was founded in 1883 and moved to its Kings Heath site in 1956. It shares a campus with Camp Hill School for Girls.
How admission works
Only boys who reach the required standard in the entrance test are eligible for a place. The school's admissions policy describes a combined score, standardised for age, on tests of verbal, numerical and non-verbal reasoning.
The test is the West Midlands Grammar Schools Entrance Test, provided by GL Assessment and shared with other grammar schools in the region. Candidates sit two multiple-choice papers of about 50 to 60 minutes each, made up of short timed sections in English comprehension, verbal reasoning, maths and non-verbal reasoning. There is no writing, and answers are recorded on a separate answer sheet. Scores are standardised for age, and the results are weighted 50% English and verbal reasoning, 25% non-verbal reasoning and 25% maths.
Registration is online and central, through the King Edward VI Foundation, and parents also list their school choices on their home local authority application form.
When there are more eligible boys than places, offers are made in this order:
- Looked after and previously looked after children who reach the qualifying score.
- Pupil Premium children who reach the qualifying score and live in the school's catchment area.
- Pupil Premium children who reach the qualifying score and live outside the catchment area, until 25% of places have been offered.
- Boys who reach the priority score and live in the catchment area.
- All other boys who reach the qualifying score, ranked by test score.
The catchment area is made up of 18 Birmingham electoral wards, including Acocks Green, Billesley, Brandwood & Kings Heath, Hall Green North, Hall Green South, Moseley, Sparkhill and Stirchley. The school publishes a catchment map.
