How admission works
City of London School for Girls sets its own 11+ assessment for Year 7 entry, in two stages, followed by an interview. Parents register online before the closing date.
- The first assessment is a one-hour computer-based test, Cambridge Select Insight, assessing numerical, verbal and non-verbal skills. Girls are invited to City to sit it.
- The second assessment is for girls who are successful in the first. They are invited back to sit a 45-minute English paper, testing creative writing and analytical skills, and a 45-minute Maths paper, testing problem-solving. The school also plans to give girls a taste of lessons at City. English and Maths specimen papers are available on the school's website.
- Interviews are held after the second assessment. Music scholarship auditions take place at the same time for shortlisted girls.
Offers of places, including scholarship and bursary offers, are sent by email in February. They are unconditional, and parents have until early March to accept. All offer holders are invited to visit the school once more before the deadline. Acceptance must be accompanied by a deposit, although no deposit is required for girls offered bursary assistance.
Scholarships and bursaries: girls interested in a music scholarship submit their application after the first assessment. Bursary applications have two stages. Applicants whose first-stage assessment shows they are eligible for a bursary, and who reach the second assessment, upload supporting documents.

Preparing with Meritfy
Our practice papers cover English, Maths and Verbal Reasoning in the GL Assessment standard multiple-choice format. City sets its own tests: a computer-based first assessment (Cambridge Select Insight) and written English and Maths papers at the second stage. Our papers are printable PDFs and do not include either of those tests. Each has worked answers, so you can go through each question with your child and help them understand the method.
- English: 9 practice papers, each with 20 multiple-choice questions covering spelling, punctuation and grammar, and comprehension.
- Maths: 12 practice papers, each with 50 multiple-choice questions.
- Verbal Reasoning: 12 practice papers, each with 37 multiple-choice questions.
- Worked answers for every question: the solutions show the method as well as the answer, so you can see where your child went wrong and help them understand how to reach it.
- Single papers or bundles: buy one paper at a time or choose a bundle. Every paper is an instant PDF download that you can print at home.
City's first assessment also tests non-verbal reasoning. Our papers do not cover it yet.
